Rockhampton Regional Council has welcomed a new face to the table as Elliot Hilse was officially sworn in as Division 2 Councillor this morning.
During a special Council meeting last week, Council resolved to fill the vacancy in Division 2 under s166A of the Local Government Act 2009 by requesting that the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) approach the runner-up from the recent local government elections.
The vacancy occurred following the sad and recent passing of the long-term Councillor, the late Neil Fisher.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at City Hall and was officiated by CEO Evan Pardon.
Councillor Hilse is a Rockhampton local who grew up in Frenchville, where he still lives with his wife Henrieke and their three children.
As an active member of the community, Cr Hilse has a passion for local history, nature, sport, music and vintage cars, entering his black Valiant in the past four Rare Spares Rockynats events.
"I have strong roots within the community, and I look forward to representing them," Cr Hilse said.
"Having grown up in the Region, I have a strong appreciation for the many recreational activities available to all, from great fishing, diverse culture and numerous events.
"Our Region offers many lifestyle opportunities, and I am particularly passionate about sharing my love for the outdoors with the younger generations, encouraging them to also appreciate it."
As part of Council, Cr Hilse is committed to contributing to Council's direction moving forward, making it a great Region to live and work.
"I have seen firsthand the challenges that people and businesses within Division 2 are facing, and I will be a strong advocate on their behalf," he said.
Under the Act, Council has two options to fill a Councillor vacancy within the first 12-months after a local government election either by a by-election or by following the procedure under section 166A to appoint the runner-up.
