Tasmanian-born Geordie Payne has been selected as the top pick at the mid-season AFL Rookie Draft overnight.
Minister for Sport and Events, Nic Street, said the 19-year- old North-West tradie had an outstanding year in the Coates League so far and his selection is testament to his hard work and determination.
"Payne has good height and has the makings of being a halfback, but he also can have an impact anywhere in the game. He's versatile and has already kicked 12 goals in five games for Tasmania this season," Minister Street said.
"North Melbourne has picked a good one here.
"The Roos have a strong history of picking up Tasmanian talent, after taking Colby McKercher at spot number two in last year's main draft. In the same year, our state had two other top 20 picks in Ryley Sanders and James Leake."
After a historic year at the draft last year, and securing pick one in the mid-season draft this year, it is clear Tasmania is producing AFL talent.
"All eyes are going to be on the calibre of AFL talent Tasmania has a proud history of producing over the next couple of years," Minister Street said.
"Again, Tasmania punches above its weight. This is amazing for Tassie footy."
