Laughter and competitive spirit filled the air as gaming enthusiasts came together for the Roxy's first E-Sports Gaming Tournament held on Saturday, 18 January 2025. The event is part of the Roxy's 'Community First' program, designed to test and commission the redeveloped theatre's new techical equipment and facilities.

Competitors were in for a one-of-a-kind gaming experience with the game feed being cast onto the large projector screen in the Roxy auditorium. The event included competitions across the games "Super Smash Brothers" (22 competitors), "Mario Kart" (16 competitors) and "Rocket League" (16 competitors). Spectators were also able to join the event to cheer on their family and friends.

Council's Manager Cultural Services, Emma Di Muzio, said it was a delight to see the youth utilise the refurbished theatre in new and exciting ways; a key mandate for the theatre that arose from extensive community consultation back in 2019.

"Not often, if ever, do you get the chance to play your favourite game on a large movie theatre screen. We hope our competitors enjoyed themselves and sincerely thank Harvey Norman Griffith for sponsoring the first prize (a gaming laptop valued at $2,299) and the Leeton Newsagency who contributed a plushie toy valued at $50.

"The E-sporting tournament was just one of many other exciting events taking place at the Roxy until end of February as part of our 'Community First' program.

"Whether you enjoy movie classics, musicals, youth discos or plays, there will be something for everyone to enjoy," she said.
