Townsville skaters could be kicking it with some of the best as they're treated to a Rumble Roadshow in suburbs throughout Townsville this weekend as part of Council's Get Active Outdoors program.
The four workshops held over three days will begin tomorrow (Saturday 4 May) and will feature some of Australia's best skateboarders from The BMD Rumble Pro Tour to local skateparks.
Rumble roadshow's Donny Fraser said the Roadshow was all about getting active, having fun and getting to know professionals through demonstrations and workshops.
"We're stoked to bring the Rumble Roadshow to Townsville over the next three days, and with it engage with young people across the region," Fraser said.
"Skateboarders are everywhere, and as part of our pledge to keep supporting community, we're heading out to more community skateparks far and wide.
"These roadshow days are 100% free to attend and for all ages and levels, you can meet your favourite competitors, watch a demo, get an autograph, learn some tricks and win some merch in the best trick jams.
"The Townsville leg of the Rumble Roadshow will feature Australian pro skaters Dennis Durrant, Danno Woolley, Corey Nixon and Townsville's very own Matthew Brassington."
Division 6 Councillor Suzy Batkovic said the events would bring the community together at four locations across Townsville while providing opportunities to participate in sport and support sporting excellence.
"Skateboarding is now an Olympic sport, which is terrific considering we have quite a few fantastic facilities throughout Townsville," Cr Batkovic said.
"The Rumble Roadshow will bring workshops to Riverway, Magnetic Island, Deeragun and Northshore over the long weekend from Saturday to Monday.
"We have some terrific athletes here in Townsville, and as a Council we're proud to support grass-roots events like Rumble Roadshow, getting young people out and active while showcasing our city's talent and enviable lifestyle here."
Mayor Troy Tompson said Council was investing in the community, making sure people have the same opportunities that they would have in larger capital cities.
"Townsville's enviable lifestyle provides a great opportunity for people to be getting out and active almost every day of the year, which is why we're passionate about investing in events and infrastructure like new and upgraded skateparks that give young people an opportunity to develop their skills," Cr Thompson said.
"Just a few weeks ago we partnered with MADE concepts to bring the 3x3 FIBA to Townsville and now we're working alongside Rumble Roadshow to engage with our skateboarding community as part of our broader Get Active Outdoors series.
"The Rumble Roadshow is all about engaging our youth, helping them enhance their skills and giving them a chance to learn from the best, so if you're into skateboarding or want to check out some very talented pros head on down to one of the four locations over the weekend."
