SA Police Nab 1,124 Speeders in Weeklong Crackdown

South Australia Police detected 1,124 speeding motorists during last week's operation safe speed.

South Australia Police detected 1,124 speeding motorists during last week's operation safe speed.

The state-wide operation was conducted between Monday 8 July and Sunday 14 July 2024 with the aim of reducing road trauma and deterring speeding on South Australian roads.

During the operation 584 expiations were issued and 540 offences were cautioned across the state. Sadly, two lives were lost, and seven road users were seriously injured.

Two drivers were caught driving erratically and performing burnouts, one of whom crashed into a stobie pole while performing a reckless activity.

Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said, it was 'frustrating' to see motorists ignoring the speed limit. "No one should lose their life or get seriously injured because someone else was in a rush and disregarding the speed limit," he said.

"Drivers need to understand that speed limits are in place to make our roads safer. The road is not a racetrack or a place for hoon driving."

In an identical operation conducted in May this year, 846 speeding drivers were detected.

During Operation Safe Speed last week, 76 drivers were detected with an illegal Blood Alcohol Concentration and 61 tested positive to drugs.

"We will keep a zero tolerance approach for those who put the life of others road users at risk," Mr Parrott said.
