If you use Corrimal Train Station, we've some good news for you! We'll be making big improvements at Murray Road, East Corrimal so that your journey to catch the train is a safer one.
This is one of many infrastructure improvement projects across the Wollongong LGA under a Transport Integration and Placemaking program supported by $6.7 million in grant funding from Transport for NSW.
Murray Road at East Corrimal will receive a significant investment of more than $3 million from this active transport infrastructure investment.
Along Murray Road, between Duff Parade to the west and Cawley Street to the east, we are planning a shared use pathway to provide connection to nearby shops, schools, the foreshore area and to the existing shared path. There will also be crossing safety upgrades to support cyclist and pedestrian movements.
These improvements will be made over the next few years. We're currently in the early planning phases of design and will consult with our community later this year with a more detailed plan.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that the projects, including Murray Road, are a great investment for our community and visitors alike. We know public transport is essential and that's why it's important we continue to look at ways to improve access for people's trips to key services.
"The works aim to build safer environments where people are comfortable to walk, cycle, scoot, or drive to and from the train station. From installing paths, upgraded lighting, to putting in traffic calming facilities, the projects will create long term benefits to support multi-modal transport," Cr Bradbery said.
"We've identified Murray Road to be a key connection for people travelling from Corrimal Train Station to the beach as well as a popular street for our community. It was previously listed for safety improvement works in our Infrastructure Delivery Program for 2023/2024 with an approved budget of $180,000.
"So, we're pleased the project has been boosted with additional funding. The deferral of this project allows us to explore more improvement options that will best suit the area.
"The grant funding is an example of how our advocacy and collaboration with Transport for NSW provides positive results for our community. We look forward to continuing this work as part of our ongoing commitment to improving transport across Wollongong."
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and Member for Wollongong Paul Scully said he is pleased that the NSW Government has provided $6.7 million to help deliver improved active transport infrastructure in and around Wollongong.
"This is a significant investment by the NSW Government and it's great to see more that $3 million being directed towards constructing the missing link in the shared path network on Murray Road in East Corrimal," Mr Scully said.
"This will lead to better and safer connectivity for local residents in the area."
Under the Transport Integration and Placemaking Project program, we're planning a range of works to improve access around selected train stations across our city. The funding will be used for various works such as:
- crossing safety upgrades at Austinmer, Corrimal, and Helensburgh,
- new and upgraded footpaths/cycleways upgrades at Coniston, Corrimal, Helensburgh, Stanwell Park, and Thirroul
- improved lighting at Bulli, Coniston, Stanwell Park, and Thirroul.
The planned completion for all projects is 2026.
