From 8 December 2024, new food safety standards will take effect across NSW, aimed at reducing the risk of foodborne illness and ensuring safer dining experiences for everyone.
These measures will help protect our community, ensuring residents, visitors, and workers can confidently enjoy food that meets high safety standards.
At Kempsey Shire Council, we understand that change can be challenging, which is why we're committed to supporting local businesses throughout this transition. Our Environmental Health team will adopt an educative approach, helping school canteens, childcare centres, supermarkets, coffee vendors selling food, and boarding schools understand and implement the new requirements with ease.
The updated Food Standards Code introduces three key requirements based on food handling activities:
- Appointing a Food Safety Supervisor to oversee food safety practices.
- Training all food handlers to ensure they have general food safety knowledge.
- Demonstrating safe food practices to manage risks effectively.
Jack Dickey, Kempsey Shire Council's Environmental Health Manager, emphasises the importance of these new standards. "In the Kempsey Shire, food safety is not just a priority—it's a responsibility we take extremely seriously. Residents, visitors, and workers demand high levels of safety at the places they eat every day. We know the vast majority of our local food businesses are already committed to best practices. These new measures further enhance processes, ensuring everyone in our community can continue enjoying food with confidence."
The new rules apply to businesses selling or serving ready-to-eat, unpackaged food that requires temperature control to remain safe. Packaged foods and items like confectionery and cakes are generally not included.
Most food outlets will need to arrange formal Food Safety Supervisor training for at least one staff member and ensure that all food handlers are equipped with general food safety skills and knowledge. Higher-risk businesses will also need to demonstrate how they manage key food safety risks.
By adopting these updated practices, our community can enjoy safer dining and peace of mind knowing the highest food safety standards are being upheld.
