Safer streets for Dromana

MPSLogo_News.jpg

In the Safer Residential Areas community consultation (2018) 77 per cent of all respondents felt vehicles travelled too fast through Dromana's residential streets and around the town.

Mornington Peninsula Shire is addressing this community concern. Dromana residents will notice new speed limits in the following residential streets:

  • William Street 40 km/h
  • Seacombe Street 40 km/h
  • Carrigg Street 40 km/h
  • Beach Street 40 km/h
  • Pier Street 40 km/h
  • Odonahue Street 40 km/h
  • Heales Street 40 km/h
  • Verdon Street 40 km/h
  • Codrington Street 40 km/h
  • Permien Street 40 km/h
  • Foote Street 40 km/h
  • Clarendon Street 40 km/h
  • Hodgkinson Street 40 km/h
  • Ligar Street 40 km/h
  • James Street 40 km/h
  • Spencer Avenue 40 km/h
  • Watson Avenue 40 km/h
  • Marcus Street 40 km/h
  • Judith Street 40 km/h
  • Noel Street 40 km/h
  • Marna Street 40 km/h

  • Seacombe Street 40 km/h
  • Williams Street 40 km/h
  • Karadoc Street 40 km/h
  • Palm Grove 40 km/h
  • Gibson Street 40 km/h
  • Joan Avenue 40 km/h
  • Arthur Seat 40 km/h
  • Francis Street 40 km/h
  • Kangerong Avenue 50 km/h (now full length to Mary Street)

A new compact roundabout will be installed at Ligar Street/Codrington Street. The small roundabout will allow motorists to better anticipate the intersection and adjust their speed accordingly, reducing both the likelihood and severity of collisions at this site.

Compact roundabouts are cost-effective compared with a standard roundabout but have a strong impact on safety by reducing fatal and serious injury crashes by approximately 85 per cent.

Works are currently underway and will be completed by 15 July 2021.

This project will align with Victoria's Towards Zero Road Safety strategy with infrastructure improvements allowing the intersection to operate as a 'safe system'.

Quote attributable to Mayor Councillor Despi O'Connor:

"When we surveyed the Dromana community about the local traffic in, we were overwhelmed with the response. Many felt crossing the road was unsafe because traffic was moving too fast. We're doing something to change this!"

Quote attributable to Councillor Antonella Celi:

"By lowering speed limits to 40 km/h in residential areas the community will feel safer when out and about walking or cycling to school, the beach or out for some exercise"

Quote attributable to Councillor Debra Mar:

"This project is approved for full funding through the Federal Government Black Spot Program. Safer streets make for a happier neighbourhood for all to enjoy."

Quote attributable to Councillor Kerri McCafferty:

"There has been a high level of community concern regarding safety at the Ligar /Codrington Streets residential intersection, which is near to Dromana Primary School. Safer local roads will hopefully encourage active travel to and from school, creating healthy habits for our children."
