Sailing Into Strong New Year

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government continues to back in the tourism industry with encouraging booking numbers for 2025.

Off the back of TT-Line's successful Black Friday campaign, Spirit of Tasmania will carry more than 167,000 passengers between now and the end of May 2025.

Spirit of Tasmania has now commenced its double sailing schedule. Subject to additional day sailings being introduced based on demand, Spirit of Tasmania is scheduled to operate 502 sailings, including 138-day sailings, until the end of May next year.

Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said the 167,274 people booked for travel from December 2024 to May 2025 was 3,299 more than the same point in time last year.

"This is a good result that will provide a net benefit for all Tasmanians," Minister Abetz said.

"We know that there has been a general softening of demand across all air and sea routes in recent times, which is what makes these figures particularly welcome.

"Pleasingly, 78 per cent of this financial year's bookings for the period are mainland Australians travelling to Tasmania.

"These are travellers who are going to be spending money in Tasmanian businesses, stay in Tasmanian accommodation and partake in all of the wonders our State has on offer.

"About 3,572 people are international travellers, with the balance of bookings from Tasmania."

Minister Abetz said 65 per cent of vehicles booked over the same period were classified as "standard".

"Twenty-five per cent of booked vehicles are caravans or motorhomes, with the remaining 10 per cent motorbikes or in the towed category," Minister Abetz said.

"This slight rise in demand is positive and I warmly welcome these travellers to Tasmania who will be making the most of our beautiful island home in the new year.

"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future works to generate benefits for all Tasmanians – today's news is in line with our objective."
