Sailor Takes Helm for Legacy

Department of Defence

For 11 days in a row Leading Seaman Miette Ireland-Johnston will tackle daily fitness exercises for the inaugural Legacy Challenge.

She will choose from sit-ups, push-ups, a run or a walk to raise money for veterans' families and promote fitness across Defence, starting November 1.

"The most exciting part about being in the challenge is helping to start it up and seeing it succeed," she said.

"It's about leading by example and motivating people to stay fit while contributing to the Legacy cause."

Having already participated in three Legacy fundraisers, Leading Seaman Ireland-Johnston joined the challenge to support the foundation and improve her fitness.

As a personal training instructor, she believes in leading by example and motivating others to stay fit.

"My goal is to run a sub-eight-minute 2.4 kilometre run. I think that would be a good goal I could smash," Leading Seaman Ireland-Johnston said.

Leading Seaman Ireland-Johnston hasn't set a fundraising target but is keen to contribute and encourage others to do the same.

"I'm putting up posters to see if anyone else is interested in doing it or donating to me," she said.

"I can also get people to stay back for an extra five minutes after a PT session to jump in with me."

People who participate can choose to increase or decrease their challenge.

"There's two different tiers," she said.

"It's to help people keep fit and progress towards higher standards with their physical fitness in Defence.

"There is nothing better than just doing it. Just get it done."

Funds raised for the Legacy Challenge support veterans' affected families.
