Sailors Clash in First Fit Games Competition

HMAS Stirling hosted its first-ever Fit Games on October 30, which saw winners crowned 'Stirling's fittest' in a range of categories.

The event's coordinator, Leading Seaman Physical Training Instructor (PTI) Zoe Davenport, said it was great to see the energy and diversity of the teams.

"Being an inaugural event, there were concerns around its running and how Navy members would compete," she said.

"However, once we started and the energy was there, we knew this was going to be a great day.

"The diversity of the teams was also fantastic to see, with people of all age brackets and mixed male/female teams, making the event feel that much more inclusive."

The Fit Games workouts were designed by the PTI staff on board Stirling, such as Chief Petty Officer Tamara Prins.

"These workouts were created for teams. The importance of this is so that each group is strategic in how they conduct the event, which helps foster team building, effective communication and planning," Chief Petty Officer Prins said.

The final event of the day was a novelty 'floatie race', a fun event that allowed participants and spectators to relax with a barbecue and presentation of winners.

Petty Officer PTI Paul Somerville-Ryan said the event's success was a reflection of the positive impact of Stirling's members completing daily workouts (WODs).

"It was great to see the Fit Games showcase the impact the WODs have had on our members, displaying not just the ability but the confidence to conduct complex movements," Petty Officer Somerville-Ryan said.

The event was a testament to the creativity and talent of Stirling's PTI staff, who curated and refined the workouts without relying on previous events, WODs or online inspiration.
