Salute to Our Defence Personnel

Department of Defence

This holiday season, the Albanese Government would like to acknowledge and thank all current and former serving members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and their families for their exceptional dedication and service.

At this time of year, we express our deep gratitude to all ADF personnel who are serving both at home and abroad, ensuring the safety and security of the nation. Their hard work, service and sacrifice is deeply valued.

2024 has been an historic year for our Defence Force. The ADF held the largest ever iteration of Exercise Pitch Black in the exercise's 43-year history, bringing together approximately 4400 personnel and 140 aircraft from 20 nations.

In the last 12 months, other major milestones included:

  • The final nine of Australia's full fleet of 72 F-35A Lightning II aircraft arrived at RAAF Base Williamtown in New South Wales, marking a significant milestone in Air Force's ability to defend our nation.
  • The successful firing of Tomahawk, along with the Naval Strike Missile and Standard Missiles 6, providing our Navy with the most sophisticated and cutting edge naval strike and missile defence capability in its history.
  • Army soldiers and aviators undertook essential platform training and special operations training activities across the UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters and the upgraded fleet of the Abrams M1A2 main battle tanks.

The Albanese Government also delivered the 2024 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program, providing a blueprint for the ambitious transformation of the ADF into an integrated, focused force that will safeguard our nation's security for decades to come.

In September, the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide delivered its Final Report, and earlier this month the Government released its response.

For all of the significant achievements this year, Defence's sailors, soldiers, aviators and public servants were at the forefront, and we thank them for their service.

We acknowledge the challenges faced by ADF personnel during the holiday season, particularly those who are separated from their families due to deployments or helping support communities in need.

These challenges affect all of us differently, and we encourage everyone to check in with their friends and families. Support services are available, including Open Arms.

No matter where you are, we thank you for your contribution and service and wish everyone in Defence, our veterans, and their families safe and happy holidays. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
