Save Children Applauds Govt's First Wellbeing Report, Demands Enhanced Focus on Youth

Save the Children Australia responds to the Government's Measuring What Matters report.

Save the Children Australia CEO Mat Tinkler said:

"We welcome the government's focus on the wellbeing of the nation through the Measuring What Matters report.

"Measuring wellbeing in addition to more traditional economic benchmarks gives a more meaningful, comprehensive, and rigorous picture of how Australians are faring and the government's performance.

"However, prioritising child wellbeing in subsequent reports would be a valuable contribution to the future health and prosperity of our nation.

"The compounding effects of the pandemic, increasing climate disasters and the cost-of-living crisis have all had profound impacts on the wellbeing of children. These impacts will continue for many decades to come, impacting the whole nation's wellbeing.

"To better represent the wellbeing of children and young people and recognise that their wellbeing now, will impact their lifelong trajectories, we recommend that future versions of the wellbeing framework include a much stronger focus on children of all ages and develop more indicators that relate to children in their own right, including their mental health, social and emotional wellbeing."
