On Saturday 1 February, we hosted the first Recycling, Share, and Repair Day at Grattan Gardens Community Centre. This was a day packed with sustainability inspiration as our community brought old, broken or unwanted goods to be responsibly recycled, repaired and rehomed.
Highlights included:
Jewellery repair: expert jeweller Emma Grace helped participants mend 18 cherished pieces, teaching them valuable skills to make repairs in the future.
Clothing repair: the team from 'A Fitting Connection' showed just how easy it is to wield a needle and thread, repairing 15 much-loved clothing items.
Share and swap: one person's trash became another's treasure. A total of 370 items were swapped, diverting 118 kilograms from landfill.
Recycling: for items that couldn't be repaired, we collected clothing, shoes, electronics, linen, and soft plastics—saving an incredible 889 kg kilograms from landfill.
We also had our libraries on hand to giveaway discontinued library books, display the toys available through toy libraries and remind the community that libraries are rapidly becoming sustainability hubs. They offer a range of events and services that go beyond books. Such as a seed library where members borrow, plant and harvest seeds from their plants that they then donate back to the library.
The Men's Shed also discussed how they keep repair skills alive by supporting the Toy Library and the wider community with repairs and supporting new members to expand their skills.
A huge thank you to our wonderful community for joining us and making sustainable choices. If you'd like to stay up to date with future sustainability events sign up to our Sustainable Stonnington newsletter.
