Palliative Care Australia is proud to partner with the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) for the 2024 Heather May Herrick Scholarship Program.
Applications are now open for five scholarships worth up to $2000 each to support more Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses in the delivery of palliative care, end-of-life pain management, aged care, oncology, and intensive care – with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, rural and remote communities, new and emerging Advanced Practice Nurses and Nurse Practitioners.
Scholarship funds support recipients in attending the 2024 ACNP National Conference, to be held 6-8 November 2024 at the Cairns Conference Centre, Queensland.
This is key learning and personal development opportunity in any nursing career, and a real opening to grow access to quality palliative care.
The scholarship's namesake, Heather May Herrick valued and benefited from the expert care of Nurse Practitioner Anne Booms during the last months of her life.
In 2005, while living in regional NSW, Heather faced a series of health challenges when she was diagnosed with the first of four primary cancers, two of which were rare. Managing her pain became increasingly difficult, until Anne stepped in. Anne played a pivotal role in managing Heather's pain and increasing her quality of life. Thanks to Anne's support and expertise, Heather's end of life experience was more comfortable, something Heather's family is very grateful for.
In appreciation for the unique role of the Nurse Practitioner in Australia, and with a desire to see more people benefit, Heather's family has funded a scholarship program aimed at supporting more Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses to deliver support to people like Heather.
