The Tasmanian Liberal Government's School Lunch Pilot has been extended with 15 schools now selected to participate next year, and a further 15 to join in 2023.
We know that nutrition can impact on a young person's ability to concentrate and learn, and our $1.4 million Food For Thought school lunch pilot will further remove barriers to learning, so that more students can fully participate and engage at school.
Priority has been given to schools in areas of most need, with the program to build on the school lunches pilot that was led by the Tasmanian School Canteen Association's (TSCA) in late 2020, and in response to the Premier's Economic and Social Recovery Advisory Council's recommendations to build and enhance the food security of our community.
Delivering on our 100 Day commitment, the successful schools will receive a grant to purchase kitchen equipment and will be supported by TSCA to develop food plans and implement a healthy lunch program, with dietician support.
Schools will have the flexibility to tailor food provisions to the needs of their students and school community, and the two-year pilot will be independently evaluated to include measuring impact on student learning outcomes.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to ensuring that Tasmanian children have the best possible start to allow them to lead happy, healthy and active lives.
