School Recreation Centre Gets $3.5M Funding Boost

  • $3.5 million allocated for structural rectification works at the Newman Recreation Centre, located at Newman Senior High School
  • Shared-use sporting and recreational facility earmarked for significant upgrade
  • Facility to remain operational during the construction period, minimising disruption for the school and local community

Newman Recreation Centre has received $3.5 million in funding for structural rectification works and much-needed repairs to the facility used by local students and the community.

Located at Newman Senior High School, the centre is a shared-use facility with the Shire of East Pilbara and is highly valued by the East Pilbara community.

The funding will allow for repairs to the centre's west wall and internal repairs to female toilets, along with the partial replacement of the east wall and repairs to the male toilets.

It is anticipated the tender will be released for the project in early 2025.

The recreation centre will continue to operate throughout the construction period, minimising disruption for the school and local community.

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

"The Newman Recreation Centre has been a social and recreational focal point for students and the local community for decades and these works will bring welcome repairs to the much-loved centre for students and community users.

"It is important for students in our regional areas to have access to facilities to support the delivery of the curriculum."

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"I have worked very hard to secure funding for this project and I am pleased to see it now progressing.

"This is a crucial piece of local infrastructure with the broader community alsobenefitting from the upgrade."
