Womensport and Recreation Tasmania (WSRT) is proud to partner with the Devonport City Council to host a free brunch for local schoolgirls in celebration of International Women's Day 2025. This event will bring together young women to hear from a panel of accomplished female athletes and sports professionals, sharing their journeys, challenges, and successes to inspire the next generation.
The event will take place on Tuesday 11 March 2025, from 9.30 am to 11.30 am at the paranaple Convention Centre in Devonport. Attendance is free for students aged 11 to 18 years and educators.
Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman will officially open the event, emphasising the role of sport in shaping strong, confident young women. "International Women's Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women and to inspire the next generation to aim high."
Moderated by WSRT Board Member and former ABC Broadcaster Sarah Gillman, the panel will feature an inspiring lineup of speakers, including Salliann Beams, General Manager of High Performance at Cricket Tasmania and a former international cricketer for England; Pip Martin, an award-winning tennis coach and participant in Tennis Australia's inaugural 'Emerging Talent Development Women's Coach Program'; Janelle Smith, a former WNBL player, Dual World Champion & Australian Masters Champion in cycling, now a renowned cycling coach; and Morgen Avent (formerly Hawkins), a former elite swimmer, state record holder, and eight-time Australian Open National finalist, now a leading swimming coach.
Jo Bailey, President of WSRT, highlights the importance of this event, saying, "Our panellists have faced challenges, persevered, and achieved incredible things. Their stories will inspire the next generation to believe in their abilities-whether in sport or any other field. Sport builds confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills-qualities that help young women thrive in all areas of life."
Alongside engaging discussions, students will enjoy lucky door prizes, giveaways, and the opportunity to connect with peers from other schools and sports teams. Bailey acknowledged the enthusiastic community support, saying, "We are incredibly grateful for the local schools, teachers, coaches, and businesses that have backed this event.
A special thank you to Kinetic Mersey Link for generously providing free transport so students can attend."
