Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today named the 20 schools that have been selected to participate in the Minister's Innovation Challenge 2022.
The chosen schools are representative of all eight education regions across Western Australia, providing an opportunity to a broad range of Year 8 students across the State to participate in the inaugural challenge.
The Minister's Innovation Challenge is part of the Career Learning Toolkit developed to address the need for students to learn about different career options.
It involves Year 8 students working in teams to develop innovative solutions to local problems they have identified.
The students will be supported by their schools and local industry mentors throughout the challenge, which is the first step in an ongoing journey of design thinking and learning for WA public school students.
The inaugural challenge is facilitated by Generation Entrepreneur and will run for four weeks during Term 4, with each team's final pitch to be showcased online through the Minister's Innovation Challenge 2022 exhibition.
The three top-ranked teams will receive cash prizes totalling $6,000.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"The Innovation Challenge is an exciting opportunity for students to develop their problem-solving skills and work closely with industry mentors.
"I am proud the McGowan Government offers initiatives that encourage critical thinking and support students' career development.
"Almost 50 schools applied to participate in the inaugural challenge, which demonstrates there is a strong interest from school students in innovation and design learning.
"I look forward to seeing the creative solutions the students develop to tackle a local issue."
