Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is pleased to partner once again with the State Theatre in Modesto for the next "Science at the State" event, happening on Saturday, April 19. This year's program, titled "Space Telescopes: Observing the X-ray Universe," will feature a fascinating scientific presentation paired with the family-friendly film Zathura (rated PG).
"Science at the State" is a free educational program designed for middle school, high school and college students. It combines cutting-edge scientific presentations by LLNL researchers with a thematically related film, creating a unique experience that both informs and entertains.
The program will take place at the State Theatre, located at 1307 J St., Modesto. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., followed by the scientific talk from 2 to 3 p.m., and the screening of Zathura at 3:15 p.m. Admission is free, and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. No pre-registration is required.
The presentation will feature LLNL scientists Megan Eckart and Natalie Hell, along with retired educator Stan Hitomi. Together, they will explore space-based X-ray observatories, such as the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM), highlighting their design and how they help unlock the secrets of the universe. The pairing of this lecture with Zathura, a popular sci-fi adventure film, creates an engaging experience for attendees of all ages interested in the theme of space exploration.
This event, part of LLNL's Science Education Program, highlights the Laboratory's groundbreaking research and aims to inspire students to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
