Search Begins For Department Of Health Secretary

Guy Barnett, Minister for Health

A nationwide search has begun for the head of agency to lead Tasmania's rapidly-growing health sector.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, said applications were now open for the Secretary of Tasmania's Department of Health.

"The Department of Health's key purpose is to care for the health and wellbeing of all Tasmanians, no matter where they live," Minister Barnett said.

"The Secretary role embodies this purpose by providing leadership to more than 16,000 staff and more than 300 plus health sites across the State.

"The ideal candidate will be a proven leader who is able to shape the direction of the health system in Tasmania and assist in delivering a better health system for all Tasmanians.

"From general practitioners in our rural towns, through to busy hospitals in our major cities, our State's health sector is large, diverse and more crucial than ever."

The Department of Health Secretary will drive a comprehensive strategic agenda to build and maintain a health system that meets the needs of Tasmanians now and in the future.

The role will focus on key strategic priorities around child safeguarding reform, digital health transformation, health workforce strategy and one health culture reform.

Minister Barnett said the Tasmanian Government has employed an additional 2,500 additional health staff into our system over the past 10 years, including 500 alone since April.

"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're investing a record $12.1 billion over the next four years to build a better health system," Minister Barnett said.

"That's $8.3 million every single day to expand our hospitals, emergency departments and healthcare services around the State."

Applications for the position will close on Monday, 25 August.
