Secretary General meets President of Portugal

Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić has met the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The Fourth Summit of the Heads of State and Government in Reykjavik (16-17 May), an opportunity to reaffirm unity at the highest political level and reinforce commitment to the Organisation's values, was the main topic of the meeting.

The Secretary General reiterated the importance of the establishment of a Register of Damage caused by the Russian aggression against Ukraine: a first step towards the creation of a compensation mechanism. Marija Pejčinović Burić welcomed the leading role of Portugal in the fight to abolish the death penalty. Finally, the role and the activities of the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity (known as the "North-South Centre") in Lisbon were also on the agenda.
