Secretary of Defense Lloyd J.

Austin III met today with Japanese Secretary General of the National Security Secretariat Takeo Akiba to discuss regional security issues in the Indo-Pacific region, reaffirming that the U.S.-Japan Alliance remains the cornerstone of regional peace and stability.

The Secretary also congratulated Secretary General Akiba on Japan's successful hosting of the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Secretary Austin and Secretary General Akiba confirmed their intent to work together to further strengthen the resolute and resilient nature of the U.S.-Japan Alliance in preparation for a "2+2" meeting later this year.
