Senator Mehreen Faruqi, Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens and Spokesperson for Higher Education, has strongly condemned the Trump administration's interference in academic research at Australian universities. She has called on the Albanese Labor government to take swift and decisive action to safeguard the integrity of our higher education sector before the consequences become more severe, including by increasing research funding.
Warning that foreign political interference poses a profound threat to academic freedom, research independence, and Australia's global reputation as a leader in education and innovation, Senator Faruqi stressed the urgency of a firm government response. She further called for a broader reassessment of Australia's relationship with the United States, highlighting the need for a more independent and diversified approach to international partnerships.
As stated by Senator Faruqi:
"The Trump administration's blatant interference in Australian research is absolutely outrageous. Weaponising funding to force their regressive agenda onto our universities is appalling. These are institutions where critical thinking should thrive, not be suppressed.
"Interference and meddling in academic research is never acceptable from our own government or any other.
"The Albanese government must increase funding for research and ensure our universities maintain their independence, allowing researchers to pursue vital work without the fear of political manipulation.
"Australia must critically reassess its deeply entrenched relationship with the United States and diversify its international partnerships to forge a more independent future."
