Cessnock City Council is reminding local residents to submit their nominations for the 2024 Australia Day Awards before entries close on Wednesday 6 November 2024, and recognise exceptional individuals and groups who have contributed to our local community.

Delma Whyte, who was recognised as this year's Senior Citizen of the Year, knows how meaningful it is to receive an Australia Day award, and is encouraging others to nominate the local unsung heroes among us.

Ms Whyte was honoured with the prestigious award at the 2024 Australia Day Awards for her outstanding involvement and dedication to the local community, demonstrated through her commitment to Cessnock Senior Choir, teaching young children, and an array of community projects including hosting an incredible 700 fashion parades and volunteering for concerts to raise money for charity.

"It was quite a surprise when I received this award," said Ms Whyte.

"There are so many people in our area who do so much, who do a lot of good work, and they deserve the recognition for it."

"I think it's an excellent idea to celebrate the marvellous people and groups who do a lot of good work in our community, and if you know someone who deserves to be nominated, I encourage you to submit an entry for them!"

The Australia Day Awards offer multiple categories, including Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Citizen of the Year.

Cessnock City Mayor Dan Watton encouraged those in the Cessnock LGA to utilise the opportunity to recognise outstanding individuals and groups within the community, and submit their nominations before entries close.

"Every nomination highlights the spirit of Cessnock. Take the time to consider those in your life who go above and beyond, they deserve the spotlight," said Clr Watton.

Residents are encouraged to submit their nominations via this page of our website.
