Tatauranga umanga Māori - Statistics on Māori businesses: September 2023 quarter presents information on one subset of Māori businesses that contribute to our country's economy. This release includes data on Māori authorities and related businesses. It does not cover all Māori businesses in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Key facts

Māori authorities are defined as businesses that receive, manage, and/or administer assets held in common ownership by iwi and Māori. Māori authorities are largely identified through their tax codes as registered with Inland Revenue. Any business within a Māori authority ownership group is also included for the purposes of Tatauranga umanga Māori.

In the September 2023 quarter, around 1,350 Māori authorities and related businesses were in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population.

All figures are actual values and are not adjusted for seasonal effects.

In the September 2023 quarter compared with the September 2022 quarter:

  • the total value of sales by Māori authorities was $1,094 million, up $131 million (14 percent)
  • the total value of purchases by Māori authorities was $809 million, up $50 million (6.6 percent)
  • the total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities was 11,620, up 230 jobs (2.0 percent)
  • the total value of earnings by employees of Māori authorities was $213 million, up $16 million (8.2 percent)
  • Māori authorities exported $150 million worth of goods, down $28 million (16 percent).

Business financial data

Industry sales and purchases for Māori authorities and related businesses in the September 2023 quarter were:

  • primary industries ‒ $405 million in sales, $311 million in purchases
  • goods-producing industries ‒ $180 million in sales, $148 million in purchases
  • services industries ‒ $510 million in sales, $350 million in purchases.

Due to the small number of Māori authorities in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population, some industries have been grouped together to allow more data to be released.

  • Primary industries include businesses involved in farming, forestry, fishing, and mining.
  • Goods-producing industries include businesses involved in manufacturing; utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and waste services; and construction.
  • Services industries include businesses involved in health care and social assistance, real estate, travel agencies, and management services ‒ for example, head offices.

For the September 2023 quarter compared with the September 2022 quarter, the total value of sales by Māori authorities and related businesses rose $131 million.

By industry, the largest movements were:

  • primary industries, up $99 million (32 percent)
  • professional, scientific, technical, administrative, and support services, up $26 million (18 percent)
  • goods-producing industries, down $22 million (11 percent).

Note that sales reported here may include donations and government funding. These funding sources are more prevalent in services industries.

Business employment data

For Māori authorities and related businesses in the September 2023 quarter compared with the September 2022 quarter:

  • the number of filled jobs for women was 6,410, up 70 jobs (1.1 percent)
  • the number of filled jobs for men was 5,220, up 160 jobs (3.1 percent)
  • the value of total earnings for men was $108 million, up $7.7 million (7.6 percent)
  • the value of total earnings for women was $104 million, up $8.4 million (8.7 percent).

The total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities and related businesses rose by 230 jobs in the September 2023 quarter compared with the September 2022 quarter. The movements by industry group were:

  • primary industries, up 410 jobs (14 percent)
  • goods-producing industries, down 390 jobs (33 percent)
  • services industries, up 210 jobs (2.8 percent).

Total earnings for employees of Māori authorities and related businesses rose $16 million to $213 million in the September 2023 quarter compared with the September 2022 quarter. The movements in earnings by industry group were:

  • services industries, up $12 million (9.8 percent)
  • primary industries, up $8.3 million (16 percent)
  • goods-producing industries, down $4.5 million (22 percent).

Goods exports

In the September 2023 quarter compared with the September 2022 quarter, the value of:

  • total goods exports by Māori authorities was $150 million, down $28 million (16 percent)
  • exports of milk powder, butter, and cheese was $36 million, down $5.5 million (13 percent)
  • exports of all other goods was $114 million, down $23 million (17 percent); other goods exported by Māori authorities include kaimoana (seafood), meat, machinery, and wine.

Note that goods may be exported by businesses in both the primary industries (for example, livestock or unprocessed seafood), and the goods-producing industries (for example, meat, dairy products, and wine).

Data updates to Tatauranga umanga Māori

Changes to business ownership and structures, including sales of subsidiaries, are reflected in these results. These changes resulted in some businesses being classified to different industry groups in the September 2023 quarter compared with the June 2023 quarter. Businesses are classified to the industry that best represents their predominant activity in each period.
