SEQ Locals to Save $239M With 20% Rego Discount

Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Minister for Digital Services The Honourable Bart Mellish
  • All Queensland light vehicle owners are set to benefit from a 20 per cent cut to rego over the next 12 months.
  • Reduced rego costs for light vehicles have now begun appearing on renewal notices issued from 5 August 2024 for regos due from 16 September 2024.
  • Across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Moreton Bay, Redland and Logan council areas, locals are set to save more than $239 million on rego over the next 12 months.

Transport Minister Bart Mellish has today announced SEQ locals will save over $239 million thanks to the Miles Government's massive 20 per cent cut to rego costs.

The 20 per cent discount has been applied to light vehicle registration renewals issued since Monday (5 August), for regos due from 16 September 2024. These can be paid anytime up until the due date.

More than 2.8 million eligible vehicles are registered to private owners and businesses through the Brisbane, Gold Coast, Moreton Bay, Redland, and Logan council areas.

Savings range between $69.35 for a one – three-cylinder vehicle, including electric vehicles, and nearly $200 on a seven – eight-cylinder vehicle.

Most Queenslanders will save almost $85 for a standard four-cylinder car, the most common vehicle in Queensland,

The mammoth cost of living initiative is funded through a $435 million package, delivered as part of the 2024 State Budget.

It's one of a number of savings and concessions provided to Queenslanders – totalling more than $11 billion this financial year.

Already, $1,000 energy bill rebates have been credited to Queensland households – increasing to $1,372 for eligible concession card holders – and all public transport fares have been slashed to a flat 50 cent fare.

All light vehicles and trailers are eligible for the 20 per cent discount, regardless of use, benefiting individuals and businesses alike.

Concession card holders will receive the 20 per cent cut on top of their existing discount already provided by the State Government.

As stated by Premier Steven Miles:

"My government is proud to be putting money back in the pocket of as many Queenslanders as possible, because that's what matters.

"We're using the super profits from multinational mining companies to give Queensland drivers a 20 per cent discount off rego.

"The good news – everyone is set to benefit over the next 12 months. If you've paid your registration recently, you'll benefit on your next renewal.

"My government has backed this plan with a $435 million investment."

As stated by Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Bart Mellish:

"Just like 50 cent fares, our 20 per cent rego discount will put money back into the pockets of Queenslanders.

"Most Queenslanders will save at least $85 for a standard 4-cylinder vehicle, and small businesses who run vehicles as part of their business will also share in the savings.

"You don't need to do anything to claim the discount. From this week, all rego renewal notices will include the discount. And if you've already paid your rego, you will get the discount next year.

Every dollar counts, and this single saving could mean a night at the movies or the footy with your family, or a trip to the Ekka for a family of four."
