Queensland SES Members have been awarded for their service, dedication and professionalism in a ceremony at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Representing Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford, Member for Mount Ommaney Jess Pugh thanked Queensland’s State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.
"I have the privilege of acknowledging the critical importance of the SES to communities across Queensland," Ms Pugh said.
"SES Week is a great opportunity for us to stop and recognise the 5600 active SES volunteers we have in this state.
"We honour and award the finalists from each region today, who have gone above and beyond in helping their communities.
"The amazing men and women here today have already been recognised as winners in their regional awards."
Mr Crawford said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to keeping Queenslanders safe and the work of the SES was vital to that commitment.
"As I’ve travelled around Queensland and met SES staff and volunteers, I’ve been overwhelmed by the stories I’ve heard," he said.
"We’re no strangers to wild weather in this state – from king tides and bushfires to cyclones and destructive storms – and our SES members are there for us before, during and afterwards.
"And for that, I thank you."
The award winners are:
- Janette Lindbergs, Mirani SES Group, who was awarded the Minister’s Cup for Queensland SES Member of the Year
- Mackay SES Unit who were awarded the Commissioner’s Cup for the Queensland SES Unit/Group of the Year
- Gold Coast City SES Unit and Brisbane City SES Unit who were awarded the Assistant Commissioner’s Shield for the Queensland SES Operation Response of the Year
- Alison Maclean, Townsville SES Unit, who was awarded the Joyce Scorey Shield for Queensland SES Trainer of the Year.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Commissioner Mike Wassing said SES volunteers were "always there in difficult times to help, support and provide comfort when our communities are most in need".
"I have the utmost respect for all of our volunteers who at times risk their own lives to make sure fellow Queenslander’s are safe," he said.
The SES is proudly supported by Principle Partner NRMA Insurance.
NRMA Executive General Manager Ramana James said the organisation was a proud partner of the QLD SES and was committed to supporting volunteers and helping Queenslanders be more prepared for severe weather events.
"We want to thank all SES volunteers for helping their communities get back on their feet faster following disasters," he said.
SES Week 2018 runs from Saturday 20 October to Sunday 28 October and is a celebration of those members and groups who have excelled in the service.
