In response to the Christmas Day storm event damage assessments are underway. So far QFES have attended more than 900 homes for damage assessments and we expect this number to rise over the coming days.
Energex has indicated there are about 21,000 homes still without power and they will have more crews around the city today, to help get the power up and running. SES and RFS volunteers continue to attend to hundreds of jobs that are still outstanding, and we thank them for their efforts.
As you start moving around if you notice a tree that you believe is a risk to public safety, please call us as soon as possible on 07 5667 5974.
Swimming Warning
While power has been restored to our sewage pump stations we are asking residents to stay out of the creeks, rivers or Broadwater swim locations until advised it's safe – stick to open beach areas to keep cool. Water quality testing is continuing and we will be updating residents as we know more about specific swimming locations.
Aquatic Centres
Most aquatic centres are open, with some exceptions:
- Helensvale Aquatic Centre (closed)
- Palm Beach Aquatic Centre (closed)
Due to the heatwave all pools that are open free of charge to the public today.
Waste and Recycling Centres
To help with disposal of food, green waste and storm waste four of our locations are open for extended hours from 6am to 6pm:
- Pimpama Green Organics Drop and Go
- Stapylton Landfill
- Molendinar Waste and Recycling Centre
- Reedy Creek Waste and Recycling Centre
All other locations are open normal operating hours. Helensvale Waste and Recycling Centre (WRC) is open from today.
To assist with the large amount of debris on private land, the City has removed the load limit for the amount of green waste that can be disposed of at our WRCs and landfill facilities for residents.
Commercial green waste fees will be waived at the Reedy Creek and Molendinar WRC's and Stapylton Landfill from today to facilitate clean up.
To dispose of food waste we recommend residents:
- Double bag it and place in your general waste bin. If there are problems with odour, leave your bin kerbside for pick-up next collection day.
- Take it to any of our open waste and recycling centres.
We have placed skip bins for food waste disposal in the most severely impacted areas and they are located at:
- Ormeau Shearers Rugby League Club
- Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre
We'll provide updates as more locations become available.
The City is currently working toward a program to conduct kerbside removal of green waste and storm debris. Whilst the logistics of this are being worked through, residents may place on the kerb green waste and storm debris for removal.
Green waste and storm debris MUST be separated to enable efficient collection and MUST NOT impede safe pedestrian access.
