Shellharbour City Council has started implementing the expansion of its Cadet, Apprentice and Traineeship (CAT) program with eight new starters welcomed into the program, including four new positions.
The new positions include three Horticulture Apprentices and a Sports Turf Apprentice.
CAT positions are jobs that combine work and structured training. Participants acquire valuable on-the-job experience and skills training that compliment external tertiary study, while earning an income.
Council's CAT program provides aspirational career pathways for local young people in various professions including civil engineering, arboriculture, events and libraries.
The next stage of the program expansion will include the recruitment of five additional positions (three apprenticeships and two trainees) in January 2025.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the expansion of Council's CAT program was an exciting boost to local employment opportunities.
"The program provides a unique professional development opportunity where participants gain hands-on experience and can explore different career options available in their field of study in a supportive environment," Mayor Homer said.
"Many of Council's apprentices, trainees and cadets go on to have rewarding and highly skilled careers.
"With roles to support a wide variety of disciplines, I encourage anyone interested to keep your eye out for opportunities as they become available," he said.
CEO Mike Archer said it was fantastic to see the recruitment of additional CAT roles.
"The Apprenticeship, Traineeship and Cadetship program promotes the maintenance of a highly skilled workforce and supports business continuity to deliver on the future needs of our community," he said.
