Shellharbour's Soft Plastic Recycling Drop Off

Shellharbour City Council launches its first soft plastic recycling drop off this Sunday 24 November at Albion Oval car park. The free drop-off service is part of a 12-month trial in collaboration with the Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation (ISJO), which consists of the four member councils of Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wollongong.

The community are encouraged to bring empty, clean and dry soft plastics for recycling, such as:

  • Plastic bags (clear and coloured)
  • Biscuit and snack wrappers
  • Chip packets and other silver-lined snack wrappers
  • Fresh and frozen food wrappers/bags
  • Pasta, bread and rice bags (both plastic and woven types)
  • Cling wrap, bubble wrap and snap lock zip bags
  • Document sleeves, mail satchels and carrier bags
  • Cereal liners and plastic pet food bag

"Shellharbour City Council is committed to supporting sustainability initiatives, whilst building a greener, more environmentally responsible community," Mayor Chris Homer said. "This community drop-off day is modelled on the successful hazardous chemical cleanout events that the community understands and values.

"When the REDcycle scheme was discontinued, residents of Shellharbour were left with little alternative but to send their soft plastic waste to landfill. This free drop-off service is a great example of Shellharbour City Council leading the way and helping do our part to create a better environment for future residents of our beautiful City."

Soft plastics make up approximately 7 per cent (by mass) red-lid bin contents, according to most recent residential kerbside bin audit. However, the volume is much greater due to soft plastics characteristic light-weight.
