The Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (Additional Jurisdictions) Bill 2024 has passed the House of Assembly.
The Bill transfers jurisdiction for a range of administrative appeals from the Magistrates Court to TASCAT.
The Bill also includes transferring jurisdiction to TASCAT from the Property Agents Tribunal and making various miscellaneous amendments to improve TASCAT's procedures and create greater consistency.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that TASCAT plays a vital role in our justice system.
"The Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal recently celebrated their third birthday – marking three years of less red tape, streamlined processes and better access to justice," the Attorney-General said.
"The Government's Bill will provide Tasmanians with even more efficiencies in our justice system.
"Furthermore, the Bill includes a legislative response to recommendation 18.13 of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.
"Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future we're seeking to make Tasmania the best it possibly can be – and considered legislation is a key ingredient to success."
