Simona Demková to Speak at 2024 Lawtomation in Madrid

On 26-27 September, the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for Law and Automation at IE Law School in Madrid hosted the third edition of the Lawtomation conference, known for exploring critical legal issues related to automation, AI, and digital rights. This year's discussions centered around the governance of new technologies and the effectiveness of current regulatory approaches in an increasingly automated world.

Simona Demková from Europa Institute presented her latest research in collaboration with Giovanni De Gregorio, with presentation, titled "The Endless Quest for Better Enforcement of EU Digital Laws," discussing the overlaps and fragmentation in the current remedial systems, highlighting how the complex web of mechanisms across different supervisory bodies can make enforcement less effective for individuals and organisations alike. The presentation also touched on ongoing efforts within the EU to address enforcement challenges, for instance through pending harmonisation of the cooperative mechanisms of the GDPR. The speakers also discussed emerging national initiatives, such as of the joint advice of the Dutch Data Protection Authority and the Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure, on collaborative enforcement of the AI Act to streamline, among others, access to effective remedies. The presentation ended with a call for further exploration into how institutional collaboration in the enforcement of the digital regulation can best be organised to enhance fundamental rights protection in the digital age.
