Caring for your skin as it gets older can help reduce the risk of chronic wounds that cause physical,  emotional and financial burdens.

Bolton Clarke Senior Clinical Nurse Adviser Kylie Elder said research shows regular twice daily  moisturiser application can help lower the incidence of skin tears by as much as 50 per cent.

“Skin tears are among the most common wounds in older people and have a high risk of becoming  chronic wounds,” she said.

“Wounds that are chronic don’t progress through the normal stages of healing and can lead to pain  and infection and stop you from doing your daily activities. They can also cause financial burden and  impact on you emotionally.

“Examples of how you can help keep your skin strong are by eating a nutritious diet, keeping hydrated,  keeping active and preventing injuries.

“If you have vein problems and your legs swell, wearing compression stockings may also be important  for you.”

When wounds occur, it’s important to be aware of the warning signs that indicate it’s time to see a  doctor or wound expert.

Warning signs include wounds that are painful or hot to touch, that have an unpleasant smell, that  have thick fluid or are taking longer than a month to heal.
