Sinking Their Teeth Into New Placements

RAAF

Defence implemented a new training program in partnership with TAFE NSW in January to enable dental assistants to complete a Certificate III that is recognised nationally.

Students of the ADF Dental Assistant Course 66 were the first to participate in a clinical placement across a number of community dental clinics in the Mornington Peninsula area, at Frankston, Rosebud and Hastings

The students contributed to local communities while completing their studies. Apart from giving them a diversity of experience not available through defence establishments, it helped them obtain the clinical hours required to gain their qualifications.

Private Juliana De Veyra said her experience at the Frankston Integrated Health Community centre was a significant addition to her growth and experiential learning.

"Working with patients from a variety of ages, demographics and socioeconomic backgrounds has deepened my understanding of equitable healthcare provision," Private De Veyra said.

"Collaborating within a diverse team, characterised by varying levels of knowledge and experiences, has fostered a dynamic learning environment. This experience underscores the significance of external clinical placements as pivotal educational opportunities, with the potential to serve as integral learning stepping stones for future cohorts."

Leading Aircraftman Allan Masa said it was a valuable experience.

"On my first week at Frankston, I was amazed at the dedication of the staff," Leading Aircraftman Masa said.

"Frankston Community Dental not only treat patients at their practice, but they also regularly see children, visiting schools and childcare centres through Victoria's Smile Squad program and much more.

"I've gained further knowledge on different procedures, but most importantly, I have a greater appreciation of where I am and what I'm a part of. I was exposed to hard-working people who always had a smile and showed genuine care for patients."

Peninsula Health Dental Program Manager Shalini Kugananthan said the placement was of benefit to all and looked forward to future collaboration.

"The ADF dental assistant students have been down to earth, shown exceptional patient care and displayed a willingness to learn alongside impressive teamwork skills," Ms Kugananthan said.

"This experience has been just as valuable to our community dental program as it has been to these students. We look forward to continuing to work with the ADF to provide this important program to future students."
