Minor preparation works will begin shortly to ready the site of the future Baw Baw Culture and Connection Precinct: Library and Learning Centre.
The works aim to upgrade the electrical infrastructure for future construction and operation of the facility and include establishment of a substation site, installation of an Ausnet electrical kiosk and relocation of some powerlines underground.
Works will mostly be carried out by Ausnet commencing in late April, with the installation of the electrical kiosk and powerline works taking place over the coming months.
Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Danny Goss said these crucial electrical upgrades are another big step forward for this fantastic community facility.
"We're continuously working behind the scenes to bring this community precinct to life. These early electrical works will be the first visible works on the ground which is exciting progress for both us and the community", said Cr Goss.
To accommodate installation of the electrical substation, three small trees require removal at the site, each deemed as non-native and non-significant trees by an independent environmental assessment. As part of the project plan, two new and more suitable trees will be planted for each tree removed.
During the site preparation works, every effort will be made by Ausnet to minimise impacts to power supply for neighbouring residents and businesses, as well as road access to Civic Place. Works will be spaced out over several weeks and occur on a Sunday, with Ausnet notifications planned to surrounding areas ahead of time.
"We want to ensure the community that Council and all contractors involved during these site preparation works are focused on delivering positive results for the community. We thank the community for their understanding and patience over the next few months as things slowly begin to take shape", said Cr Goss.
The procurement process has now progressed to the next stage with a shortlist of suitable construction contractors finalised and ready to undergo further evaluation in the coming months.
"We received several quality contractor submissions during the expression of interest process held in late 2024. The project team are now working closely with shortlisted contractors to determine the best way forward", said Cr Goss.
A construction timeframe for the $35 million state-of-the-art library and learning community facility is yet to be finalised as Council continues to explore avenues to secure the final $6 million in funding needed to achieve the total project budget.
Council has committed $10 million towards the project, with the balance being largely funded through various State and Federal Government grants.
Located on the corner of Albert Street and Civic Place in Warragul, the centre is set to include:
New community library, including a children's library, maker's space, video gaming, reading, collection and study areas.
Creative and cultural space.
Community meeting rooms.
Consulting rooms.
Co-working spaces.
Public terrace area.
Public amenities including a parent's room and accessible facility.
Plaza and pedestrian connection to the West Gippsland Arts Centre.
