Sky's Limit, Hydro's Energy Generation Limit Lifted

Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables

The limit constraining Hydro Tasmania to develop new energy generation has now been lifted by the Tasmanian Government.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said the Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering new renewable energy generation, to create jobs and ensure Tasmania continues to have the lowest power prices in the nation.

"The Government wants to see Hydro building or partnering to unlock new renewable energy generation in Tasmania," Minister Duigan said.

"This will play an important part of Tasmania meeting its legislated commitment to its Renewable Energy Target to double renewable generation by 2040.

"Lifting the 40MW legislative constraints to building new generation from Hydro Tasmania will create jobs for Tasmanians during construction and ongoing opportunities with industries who come, and stay, in Tasmania to benefit from our affordable, renewable energy.

"Today regulations have been gazetted and come into effect to lift generation to 300MW. This removes the speed limit from Hydro to bring on new generation."

Minister Duigan said the Government's Sky's the Limit election commitment to draft legislation to lift the limit on Hydro's new energy generation was part of our first 100 day plan.

"We've now done that," Minister Duigan said.

"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is all about ensuring our State has the lowest possible power prices, enabling our energy sector to have a secure future, and creating economic growth and job creation."
