Local sporting clubs are set to benefit from grants awarded under Healthway's Healthy Sporting Club Program.
Grants worth a total of $228,208 were awarded to 72 sporting clubs across the State to purchase canteen equipment and train canteen managers on how to provide more healthy food and drink options for members.
The Healthy Clubs initiative is a boost to local clubs planning for season activities as part of Phase 3 of the McGowan Government's COVID-19 Roadmap.
With the support of the Western Australian School Canteen Association, clubs will be provided with free training and support to prepare healthier menus in their canteens.
The Healthy Sporting Club winter grants will benefit clubs across football, rugby, soccer, basketball, horse and pony, BMX, swimming, netball, hockey and motorcycle riding. Some of the clubs receiving grants include:
- Belmont Junior Soccer Club (Inc) $3,269;
- Carnarvon Motorcycle Club $3,998;
- Exmouth Basketball Association Inc $1,445;
- Kwinana United Soccer and Social Club Inc $1,588;
- Guildford Kalamunda District Swimming Club $3,285;
- Narembeen Netball Club $3,983;
- Narrogin Dirt Bike Association $4,000;
- Victoria Park Xavier Hockey Club Inc $1,850; and
- Swan Valley Horse and Pony Club Inc $3,000.
Since the program started in 2019 there have been 158 Healthy Sporting Club Grants awarded, providing $534,034 in funding to metropolitan and regional clubs across WA.
It is a strong focus of the McGowan Government to promote healthy lifestyles and support health promotion initiatives.
The Healthy Sporting Club Program helps to shape and provide sustainable strategies for increasing healthy eating choices in the Western Australian community.
