Smoke Advice - Bushfire Response: Eastern Beach, K'gari

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is responding to a bushfire at Eastern Beach on K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) in Great Sandy National Park.

The fire was reported to QPWS about 9am this morning (2 August 2024) south of the Maheno Camp Zone.

Investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced, with initial information indicating the fire was caused by an escaped, illegal campfire.

At this time, there are no immediate threats to visitors or values on the island.

QPWS firefighting crews and police are currently responding to the fire.

Recent planned burn operations in the area are expected to help mitigate the risk of the fire.

Visitors and residents in the area are reminded to obey all signage, follow directions from Rangers and emergency services.

As a result of the fire, smoke may be seen in nearby areas. If smoke affects you, stay indoors where possible and keep respiratory medication close by.

Campfires are prohibited on K'gari with the exception of two designated sites in Dundubara and Waddy Point campgrounds.
