Snapshot reveals positive unemployment numbers

A snapshot of the Cairns economy shows the city's unemployment rate has declined, job advertisements are continuing to rise, and consumer spending in August almost reached $300 million.

Unemployment for the broader Cairns SA4 region has reduced slightly to 5.3% as at September 2021, compared with 6.1% twelve months ago.

Consumer spending in August 2021 was $299 million in the Cairns LGA, of which $77 million was visitor spend. This was a decrease from previous months, possibly reflecting the impact of border restrictions with southern states.

Monthly Jobseeker recipients have reduced to 9,070 in September, well below levels 12 months ago, while monthly job advertisements for the Far North have continued an upward trend.

There were more than more than 5,700 job advertisements recorded in September, well above levels from twelve months ago. Job advertisements have been steadily increasing over the past six months.
