  • Brown Street site will offer mix of social and affordable housing options
  • Site identified through Cook Government's pilot Housing Diversity Pipeline

The Cook Government has today announced Housing Choices Western Australia Limited as the preferred proponent to construct and operate a new 30-dwelling community housing development in Busselton, as part of the Housing Diversity Pipeline.

The proposed four-storey development on Brown Street, Busselton, which received a major boost in the 2024-25 State Budget, will offer a mix of 16 social and 14 affordable housing options located close to the CBD and local services.

The 2,034 square metre development site is part of the Cook Government's Housing Diversity Pipeline, to maximise the potential of lazy government land to bolster social and affordable housing.

Housing Choices WA is a community housing provider managing social community neighbourhoods for 3,000 Western Australians in the Perth, Peel, and South West regions.

As the preferred proponent, Housing Choices WA will partner with the State Government, through DevelopmentWA, throughout the project to ensure a high-quality development that integrates with the neighbourhood. Upon completion, the provider will operate the complex with the Department of Communities.

The development will be built to silver Liveable Homes standards with a minimum 6-star NatHERS rating. Upon construction completion, Housing Choices WA will provide tenancy, maintenance and placemaking services for the building and its residents.

A development application is expected to be lodged by the end of November 2024 by Housing Choices WA.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

"The Cook Labor Government is doing everything we can to boost housing supply across the State - particularly for the most vulnerable members of our community.

"This well-located site in Busselton will offer and create an accessible and affordable housing project for one of the South West's busiest communities and will be constructed and operated by preferred proponent Housing Choices WA.

"The Brown Street development will deliver 16 social and 14 affordable high-quality homes within walking distance to Busselton's CBD, shopping centres and recreational areas.

"Our Government is unlocking lazy government land through the Housing Diversity Pipeline to maximise the potential of the land for social and affordable housing.

"The Housing Diversity Pipeline is one of many reforms supporting this Government's record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures."
