Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence has welcomed the easing of South Australia–Victoria border restrictions announced today, which he said would provide much-needed relief to residents in border towns such as Murrayville.
From midnight this Thursday, there will be a 40-kilometre travel zone in South Australia-Victoria border areas.
"It's been a very difficult few days for residents in our border towns. Their livelihoods, even their health, was potentially put in jeopardy by the severe restrictions that isolated these communities," Cr Clemence said.
"It's pleasing to see common sense has prevailed and the South Australian Government has relaxed its border restrictions."
The Mayor said today's announcement, as well as reported planned changes to New South Wales border restrictions, illustrated the power of a united voice among regional communities.
"When the harsher South Australian border restrictions were first announced there was stress and anxiety, but there was also a tremendous solidarity in our community," Cr Clemence said.
"We added our voice to the strong messages of our state and federal representatives, as well as the many other local agencies in our region and in other border areas, and our voice was heard."
Cr Clemence said while the easing of the South Australia-Victoria border restrictions was a relief, there may still be some practical challenges associated with the remaining South Australia and New South Wales border restrictions, and Council would continue to advocate on the community's behalf."
