Campaspe Shire Council has advertised a tender for the construction of an open drain as a localised flood-relief solution for stormwater flows along South Boundary Road, west of Lake Road.
Following heavy rainfall during the October 2022 floods and conversation with residential landowners impacted by the heavier than usual overflow, Council engaged an engineering consultant to consider options for improving the management of floodwater in the localised area. Council has subsequently advertised a tender for the option of an open drain on the north side of South Boundary Rd, running along the southern edge of the Parkland Golf Course. This drain, to be built on land owned by Goulburn Murray Water, will provide a connection between the existing drains either side of the golf course.
The open drain will be the outlet from the stormwater detention basins to the east of Lake Road which only come into effect when high rainfall events cause the Fauna Park Lakes to top over the spillway. It will carry stormwater through the Goulburn Murray Water land, discharging into the existing roadside drain that will carry the stormwater further to McEwen Rd and then through to the Goulburn Murray Water mosquito drain.
Director Infrastructure, Kate Lemon said that this was the best localised approach to control the flood-relief discharge in this area, reducing risk for the residents in the vicinity.
"This is a localised solution for this area, and we know there are drainage issues across Kyabram that we are working on and that need bigger picture planning, however this solution will not hinder those and will provide an immediate solution for this area," she said.
Ms Lemon said the new subdivision development on the west of Parkland Golf Course has been planned with necessary approvals to manage stormwater and discharge from this area, including a piped drainage system and new basin at the centre of the development, and the stormwater discharge will not put additional load on the open drain in South Boundary Rd.
