NSW Police has joined forces with sporting groups and school students from across the South Coast to kick off the DV Awareness Cup today.
Launched in 2023, in a bid to educate and encourage people to take a stand against domestic and family violence, the South Coast Police District, along with Group 7 Rugby League, NSW Rugby League and NRL will host approximately 150 students from Year 9 to 11 from the Shoalhaven region, in an under 16s Rugby League (men's) and League Tag (women's) Gala Day.
This year's DV Awareness Cup will see five local high schools - Nowra High School, Vincentia High School, Shoalhaven High School, Bomaderry High School and Ulladulla High School compete.
This week, students were presented with specially designed jerseys for the DV Awareness Cup designed by students at each school with a reference to their heritage and community.
Shoalhaven-based government and community organisations will also be in attendance, providing information to students and their families on services and support available to break the cycle of domestic and family violence.
Former NRL great and Australian Rugby League representative, now NRL Ambassador, Garry Jack, along with St George Illawarra NRL players Sione Finau and Michael Molo and NRLW players, Tara McGrath-West, Keele Browne, Leio Fotu-Moala and Sara Sautia will also attend the day.
South Coast Police District Superintendent Darren Brand said the event is a great example of the NSW Police working with the broader community to bring awareness to this important issue.
"We know domestic violence can be a silent crime and it can be particularly difficult for survivors to reach out for support and help. This event, gives people an opportunity to access those services in a less formal environment or for friends and family to reach out, on their behalf," Superintendent Brand said.
"It is much more than a footy game. The event also included educational talks at the participating schools in the lead up to the DV Awareness Cup. We hope it will help educate the younger generation about respect and work towards breaking the cycle of domestic violence."
Members of the community are encouraged to attend and cheer on the students at the Bomaderry Sporting Complex.
At the conclusion of the event, a merit-based team will be selected to attend training and a meet and greet session with the Dragons NRL and NRLW teams.
The games run from 9am until 2pm.
