More than 150 firefighters, along with dozens of fire trucks and water aircraft came together for a group training exercise in Boneo yesterday (20 November).
Despite the wet conditions, firefighters from CFA Western Port and Peninsula Groups were joined by Forest Fire Management (FFMVic) firefighters, for the large-scale exercise.
CFA South East Deputy Chief Officer Trevor Owen said the exercise was part of extensive preparation to ensure volunteers are ready for the fire season.
"Days like this are vital in ensuring Victorians are protected as much as possible," DCO Owen said.
"Three years of La Nina conditions have resulted in a lot of growth, but when the weather finally dries out, we may face a challenging fire season.
"Much of Victoria currently has waist-high grass fuels that will continue to grow with the cycling of the rain and sun, so the risk of grassfires this season will be our main concern."
The exercise simulated a grassfire burning in a heavily vegetated area, with the cause of the fire unknown, to be treated as suspicious.
Throughout the day, firefighters practised skills such as pump relay, asset protection, aerial attack, foam lay and running grass attacks.
Western Port Deputy Group Officer Troy Wilding was Exercise Controller for the large-scale training exercise.
"Although it might be quite wet underfoot, fires can still happen," Deputy Group Officer Wilding said.
"Training exercises like this are essential to ensure our brigades and members are knowledgeable and skilled in responding to fires and emergencies, so we can continue to offer a professional and committed service to our community.
"We'd like to thank the crews for their dedication to training and ensuring their readiness to protect life and property."
