South Eastern Freeway Pavement Rehabilitation - Toll Gate to Heysen Tunnels

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is undertaking major pavement rehabilitation works on the South Eastern Freeway between the Toll Gate and the Crafers Interchange. This $35 million project is jointly funded (80:20) by the Australian and South Australian Governments under the South Eastern Freeway Pavement Rehabilitation Stimulus 2.

The works involve removing around 300 millimetres of existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt. Major asphalting works such as these were last undertaken on this section of the freeway over 20 years ago. These works will ensure the long term safety and integrity of the freeway for all road users.

Major works are scheduled to commence on Sunday, 7 February 2021, and are expected to be completed by July 2021, weather permitting.

To safety facilitate the works and minimise impact to road users the works will be undertaken at night from Sunday to Friday at the following times:

• Sunday evening works will commence from 5pm, to 6.00am Monday

• Monday to Friday between 7pm and 6:00am

• Friday evening works will continue to 8.00 am Saturday.

Day works may also be required on five weekends, where works will be continuous from 7pm Friday through to 6:00am Monday. Advance notice will be provided on the details of these weekend works.

In the event of extreme fire danger conditions no works will be undertaken.

The works will be undertaken in stages on sections along the freeway between the Toll Gate and the Heysen Tunnels. Vehicles will be directed onto the other side of the freeway during the night and weekend works. During the works, on the side of the freeway open to traffic, one lane of traffic will operate in the uphill direction for all vehicles, and two lanes will operate in the downhill direction for all vehicles.

Heavy vehicles, including buses will have access on the freeway during all of the works.

Speed restrictions will be in place between the Toll Gate and the Stirling Interchange for the duration of the works. Outside of the hours of works, lane restrictions and speed restrictions will be in place on the freeway.

Variable Message Signs will be in place at key locations to provide early notice to motorists of the traffic restrictions.

Signage will be in place for motorists requiring access to the Mount Osmond Interchange, Mount Barker Road and Crafers Interchange.

Please take extra care when workers are on site. Observe signage and speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.

Motorists should expect delays, so please plan ahead and allow additional travel time.

The Department appreciates your patience and cooperation while these important works are undertaken.
