The Rockliff Liberal Government is investing $879,000 in South George Town Primary School to upgrade two Years 5 and 6 classrooms, as part of its $10 million contemporary classrooms program.
Liberal Member for Bass Simon Wood said the upgrade will provide contemporary learning spaces for staff and students at South George Town Primary School, as well as activity and quiet spaces, and outdoor learning facilities.
"We know the physical learning environment has an impact on student access, engagement and participation in learning, and that is why we are giving our young people the education facilities they need to thrive," Mr Wood said.
"The Rockliff Liberal Government is also supporting Tasmanian jobs through this project, with local building contractor R and T Rosier Constructions delivering the upgrades.
Construction works at South George Town Primary School are underway and are expected to be completed in early 2024.
There are 12 schools across the State being upgraded as part of the Rockliff Liberal Government's $10 million contemporary classrooms program.
The 12 schools, which are also Priority 1 sites for major capital investment identified by the Department for Education, Children and Young People include:
- South George Town Primary School;
- East Derwent Primary School;
- Dodges Ferry Primary School;
- Mowbray Heights Primary School;
- Lilydale District School;
- Glen Dhu Primary School;
- Ringarooma Primary School;
- Port Dalrymple School;
- Risdon Vale Primary School;
- Campbell Town District High School;
- Havenview Primary School; and
- Rosetta Primary School.
Liberal Member for Windermere Nick Duigan said works were also underway at Lilydale District School and Havenview Primary School.
"Works at Lilydale include upgrading three Year 9-10 classrooms, breakout areas for quiet or small group work, and improved outdoor learning facilities," Mr Duigan said.
"The construction tender will soon be awarded for the works to Risdon Vale Primary School and tenders will be released for upgrades to Ringarooma Primary School and East Derwent Primary School in the coming weeks.
"The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmanian teachers, students and families by providing the best possible facilities for our learners."
The contemporary classrooms program is part of the $255 million in the 2023-24 State Budget for new and upgraded education infrastructure, reinforcing our commitment to providing the best possible facilities for our learners.
