South Sudan-born Man Sentenced For Visa Breaches In WA

A South Sudan-born man was sentenced to 14 months' imprisonment by the Perth District Court yesterday (17 March, 2025) after pleading guilty to 11 breaches of his visa-mandated conditions.

The Commonwealth sentence will start in July, 2025, following a term of imprisonment the man is already serving for unrelated state offences.

The Judge ordered the man serve one month in custody for the Commonwealth offences, then be released for the remainder of the term on a Recognisance Release Order to be of good behaviour.

The AFP charged the man, 34, in July, 2024, for breaching the conditions of his Commonwealth visa on 11 occasions by failing to observe his reporting obligations.

The man pleaded guilty to 11 counts of failing to comply with a monitoring condition, contrary to section 76B(1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).

This offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment and/or a $99,000 fine.
