Spate Of Frontline Worker Assaults

NT Government

The CLP Government is deeply concerned by the recent spate of assaults against frontline workers who dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe.

In the past week, seven police officers were assaulted, with one officer being knocked unconscious, and reports of six instances involving St John paramedics just overnight.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said: "This behaviour is completely unacceptable and has no place in our community."

"Assaulting a police officer, paramedic, nurse, or any other emergency worker is not only an attack on an individual but an attack on the entire community. Such behaviour is cowardly and shocking, and offenders will face significant consequences," she said.

Under the new CLP Government, laws have been strengthened to ensure frontline workers are protected.

Previously, there were no mandatory minimum sentences for such assaults. Now:

Assaults involving physical harm, or spitting on a frontline worker, carry a mandatory minimum sentence of three months' imprisonment, even for first-time offenders.Assaults without physical harm result in a mandatory Community Correction Order, even for first-time offenders.Assaults causing physical harm by offenders with prior convictions for violent offences now carry a mandatory minimum sentence of actual imprisonment.

"Our frontline workers face challenging situations every day to protect and serve Territorians," said Mrs Finocchiaro.

"It is disappointing and unacceptable that some individuals respond with violence and aggression against the very people there to help them.

"I urge all Territorians to stand in solidarity with our frontline workers. They deserve respect, support, and a safe environment in which to carry out their vital roles."
