Special Operation Avalite Update

  • Special Operation Avalite has established investigation teams in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne and has commenced engagement with Jewish community groups across Australia.
  • Special Operation Avalite will use Commonwealth legislation to investigate, disrupt and prosecute high harm, high impact offending that criminally targets the Australian Jewish community and federal parliamentarians.
  • Special Operation Avalite will not replace state and territory jurisdictional primacy, particularly for state offences, but will complement existing state and territory law enforcement by leveraging Commonwealth legislation and resources where appropriate.
  • Since 9 December, 2024 when Special Operation Avalite was established, the AFP has received 124 reports of crime for potential offences under Commonwealth legislation.
  • As of 9 January, 2025:
    • 102 reports are under investigation.
    • 22 reports have not been accepted for investigation.
      • These reports may have been finalised due to insufficient evidence, the matter has been investigated by another law enforcement agency or is a duplicative report.
  • Special Operation Avalite continues to review AFP holdings for historic reports dating back to 7 October 2023.
  • The AFP will provide further updates at an appropriate time.
